My entry for June 2010 11 Second Club competition [link]
I ended up on 13th place, out of 158.

They are supposed to be aliens. Chatting over a human body. That grey surface is supposed to be the body, covered with some kind of sheet. It has medical stuff sticking out of the open wound. It's being dissected.
Apparently the clarity was quite an issue, so I'm sparing you the effort.

I finished this almost in one session, I spent 16 hours animating with breaks for food, and then after a while I spent few more hours tweaking mouth shapes.

Done in Toonboom.

@00:11W życiu bym nie pomyślała, że to szare to ciało. Myślałam raczej, że to stół, na którym ono leży. Ale kosmici i animacja... no piękne. Zwłaszcza w zestawieniu z dialogiem. Chyba muszę pooglądać trochę Dr. Who, bo widziałam w życiu jeden odcinek.

A dr. Who... Tak on się unosi wszędzie w powietrz... w Internecie. :)

@00:10ah ffuck stop animating so much or I'll have to make an animation studio and bring you here and hire you to work for me.

... You want to animate for my studio?

Haha I think if you work for me, I would pay you.

but it would be in Canadian dollars.
How much is the industry standard in your country by the hour?

Oh, it's certainly lower than MY standard.
(Shh. I am trying to sound professional and drag attention of my prospective employer to my confidence about my skills.)

That is just a poor excuse to avoid the question, because I am still a student, and I struggle desperately to figure out this 'animation job' business.

I will pay you a little bit more than minimum wage! In canadian dollars... XD

Well then, apparently minimum wage in Poland converted into Canadian dollars would be about 1.50 CAD. I'm guessing that's just enough for a warm cardboard box and few dead pigeons for lunch, just as I like it.
Does everybody start like that in this business?

I am totally moving to Poland and bringing all my big Canadian money.

Minimum wage in Canada is different depending on what province you're in.
Some places it is $6.00
Some places it is $12.00

In animation, you start at... hmmm a good chunk over minimum wage.
About 25%-50% higher sometimes,
But since I have always been fired before I could ever get a raise, I have no idea what the average is - only what some starting wages are.

The biggest problem isn't that you don't earn enough money, but that a contract will only last until a show or project is finished, so it's very inconsistent.

Ah. So since I am totally moving to Canada, maybe we should swap identities, so that we can avoid all this silly visa thing.
Especially me.

I had this nasty suspicion that when entering the business from almost zero level, you are forced by big angry boss to accept any mercifully given salary and be grateful, you! Good to know that that's not the case. Not in Canada, anyway. At least I know where it's worth to emigrate.
I am (vaguely) aware that contracts are mostly project-long at best, but right now my biggest worry is if I will ever get any offer of such. It's all so... foggy from my perspective, if you know what I mean. Sigh.
Ah well. Thanks a lot for all the information.

@00:11Is Toon boom a program I can install on my computor?!! :D If you use it I NEED IT! How long does it generally take you to do say...5 frames? I'm trying to start in on my own little animations and I need advice.

Toonboom is a commercial program. You can find the company's website at [link] They have a few versions of the software, some for animation, some for storyboarding, varying by features, and, well, price. I have got Toonboom Studio, I paid about 150 dollars for it, I think, but I think there was some kind of a special offer.

It's difficult to say how long it takes me to animate something. I thought my record is 8-10 seconds (of simple, rough animation) in 5 days, but once it took me 6 weeks to animate 10 second long dialogue scene; and then on this one (aliens- approx. 11 seconds) I spent only 16 hours in one go, so it would be about two days. It all depends on the motivation, I think. But I think the average, with good motivation, for rough animation like the one above would be 4-6 seconds (1 second- 24/25 frames) a week.

Haha, thank you :) Toonboom is fairly easy if you don't use too much of motion tweening for animation, I think. I once downloaded trial version of Flash and I wasn't even able to switch between the frames. I ended up scribbling depressingly on the first frame. I urgently need training, too, haha.

@00:11Yeah, I can see how it was an issue for them, Im not sure I would've caught it if you didnt say anything.

Im not sure if anybody brought it up in the comments of the competition, but I think this could be greatly improved by doing different things during his 3 deep breaths. Right now he does all three at the same direction and hight. Know what I mean?

@00:11Oh yes, they did bring it up. And I did expect that, I know I am not supposed to repeat animation like that, but I figured it could still work okay with adjusting the timing of separate sighs, so I left it like that, since that was quite a busy period for me. But thanks for crits anyway.

I always have problems with clarity and story in general. That's just so difficult to get it right. But I will figure that out someday.

I hope so.
